#SelfCareMatters: Why Taking Care of Yourself Should Come First

It’s so easy to punish ourselves first when something in life doesn’t go our way. We fill our minds with negativity and measure our success based on the rough patches in our lives. Well, I’m here to tell you that you deserve to love yourself in all moments of your journey. You deserve to go back to the drawing board and figure out another way to get to accomplish your dreams. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but think about how much love you’re missing out on yourself because your thoughts are so clouded with negativity? Let’s change that mindset. Let’s break that cycle of thinking. No, it’s not easy, but what’s the alternative? Not loving yourself, sulking as life passes you by? No, that’s dead.

I am working on loving myself during the cloudy days and the sunny days. I try my hardest not to dwell on the things that I can’t control. What I can control is my reaction to situations throughout life. I can choose to respond when life switches gears. I’m learning new habits along with my journey, small steps that contribute to the bigger picture. As I’m entering year twenty-five, the vision is becoming more evident. No one is responsible for my well-being. I will say that is important to keep a tribe around you to fuel you in times of darkness. We’ve all been there before. We’ve all dung ourselves in a hole with no intention of coming out, but the reality is we can’t hide from ourselves and the lessons coming our way.

One thing I know for sure, old habits don’t create new results. If you’re in your comfort zone, we have a problem. Each day, we evolve. We become better versions of ourselves. You deserve to appreciate the beautiful person you’re turning into. Here are some remedies that I recently started using and it’s helped so far.

  • When you wake up in the morning, do not pick up your phone and go to social media. The way you start your morning sets the tone for the day. Use the first thirty minutes to an hour getting your mind right. Think about the things you want to accomplish today, even if it’s one thing on the list, get it done. Sometimes, I’ll listen to morning motivations on Youtube. I also use Shine Text, which is an app that sends you some advice to shine throughout the day. Whatever works for you, do it.

  • Be your own cheerleader. When you get out of bed and go to the bathroom, look in the mirror and tell yourself that you’re amazing, beautiful,  a superstar. Whatever it is that you envision for yourself, tell yourself that daily.

  • Set small goals, accomplish them, and add some more goals to the list. I’m learning the bigger picture doesn’t exist without the baby steps. For example, if you want to lose weight this year, enroll in a gym. Start off by attending group fitness classes, so that you don’t feel alone. Make a friend and hold each other accountable.

  • Shit happens, but understand you’re going to be alright in the end. Life happens, we can’t control everything, but as long as you put your best foot forward, the universe will work itself out. Something that I do is imagine myself at the finish line in a situation, and it helps me get through the ups and downs. For example, if I have a paper due for class in two days and I haven’t started. I picture myself submitting my paper, and suddenly I’m okay. I know I’m capable of getting my paper done, so why am I freaking out? I know the job will get done.

I hope these tips help you push through. You deserve to be happy. You deserve the best. Now allow yourself to live your best life.
